Glycerin Suppositories 1g.
To promote evacuation of the bowel.
Dose: Once daily or as required,
Dip the suppository in cold water before use.
Insert the suppository well up into the rectum of the infant or child and ensure it is retained for about five minutes in order to induce evacuation.
Product notes:
Pack of 12 - two strips of 6, divided into detachable blisters. Pull apart flaps to release each suppository.
Comments:
Whilst certainly they're the least dangerous (minuscule chance of any side-effects) method of treating constipation, it's worth remembering that because they're mild enough to be used "daily if necessary without concern" (Dr Michael Levett). In the past these were used as a potty-training aid, to produce excrement at a convenient time of day. Which makes sense - it only takes five minutes for the gelatinous suppository to dissolve. And in fifteen minutes - all that dung and smell comes gushing out!
